Meet Incandescent, also known as Charlie—a stunning 9-year-old Zangersheide gelding. Charlie is ridden and loved by Sophie Brown-Proctor, who rides out of Enrite Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Charlie isn’t just beautiful—he’s truly one of a kind. With a personality as glowing as his name, he adores being pampered and thrives on attention. “He never gets annoyed by people being around him,” Sophie shares. “He’s always so loving and sweet. Everyone at the barn adores him—he’s definitely a favorite.”
But like all the best characters, Charlie has a bit of a funny side too. “He likes things his way,” Sophie laughs. “He wants to please, but if something under saddle feels unnecessary to him, he’ll definitely let you know!”
One of Sophie’s most cherished memories with Charlie happened just weeks after importing him. “We had only had him for about three or four weeks when we spontaneously decided to enter him in a show. My trainer hadn’t even shown him before me—it was totally last-minute.” But Charlie rose to the occasion. “He couldn’t have been better. He was reserve champion in both the division and the Zone Finals. It was my first time back in the hunter ring in over a year and a half, and it just felt like everything fell into place. That moment confirmed I had found the perfect partner.”
Charlie came into Sophie’s life through a leap of faith. “My previous trainer in Texas helped us find him. My mom and I imported him based on a video. I was so nervous—it felt risky. But my trainer’s friend and partner in the Netherlands was incredibly trustworthy, and I’m so glad we trusted the process.”
Favorite treat? “He’ll eat just about anything—he even tries to snack on the decorative plants at horse shows!”
Sophie has been riding for over 10 years, first discovering her love for horses after attending a friend’s birthday party at a barn. She was instantly hooked. Her favorite part of horse ownership isn’t just the competition—it’s the connection.
