Houston Equine Photography | Lola the Quarter Horse

Lola, LolaBelle, is a QH/TB Mare. Who lives at Austin Equestrian Center with her owner, Catherine Campbell.

This velvety black mare with a blaze and chrome on all four legs is quite striking. I don’t think I have seen a blacker or shinier horse in my life! She is an oddball however. She wants attention but acts like she doesn’t. She is highly opinionated. Has a loving side and wants to be groomed and grazed mainly, but then again what horse doesn’t want that? Catherine is still learning so much about her. She demands a respectful relationship with her handlers and if she feels she is not getting your utmost respect you better be paying attention. She is smart and has a knack for reading the room.

Lola is currently under saddle and being restarted by the ground up to ensure she has all of her basics down. She is a Western Dressage Prospect.

The pair first met when Erin Givens of Sterling Hunter Jumpers, was trying to find her a home and posted her in a group message on Facebook to other trainers and instructors in our area. “I picked her up at the end of June 2016. She was sweet until she realized I had no treat! She loaded up well but it took a while to make a connection with her.”

I asked Catherine to describe Lola in one word and she said, “Water. Calm as the stream, dangerous as a raging flood.” Well that isn’t quite one word, but I think it works.

“A huge accomplishment for LolaBelle is being able to work without the anger and pain she had before. She wants to go for rides now and looks for work it’s awesome to see. She has a titled Pelvis and arthritis so moving had caused pain for long she had begun to act out terribly and when she was homed with me I put in a lot of time trying to find out what was the root cause.”

“LolaBelle has given me a new understanding and appreciation for working with mares. I’ve always been a stallion and gelding person. She also has reminded me to go slow and read all the signs. The answers are there if you open your eyes and your heart.”

Catherine’s favorite memory with Lola was “The first join up moment I shared with LolaBelle. She made me work for it!!! That feeling of your. It’s electrified with that connection as you feel”

Catherine’s favorite thing about horses is “Their heavy sigh and tickle at the back of your neck and the tension melt away.
